Why these project specifications ?
Why these project specifications ?My question was : what is the use of the Subconscious ? ("sub" meaning above consciousness and not unconscious, "un" meaning without consciousness). After much conversation and thought, we concluded that it had two uses. 1. Its function : to shelter from ourselves what needs sheltering, thereby protecting us from what our conscience cannot handle because of badly adapted cultures or intelligence. 2. Its raison d'être : to compensate for our incapability of judging ourselves or for our great difficulty in extracting positive and reconstructive thoughts from a "shocking" situation. These effects force the Subconscious to stay "secret" and to act as such. If we ignore it completely, it will come to express itself with and against everything, whereas if we focus on it, it will be quiet or lie by means of self-defence, as we are turning it into a second consciousness, a role which it cannot take without endangering life itself. Working through opposites and proving extreme "mastery" in the proper sense of the word can make it wish to express itself, like a child we turn our backs on. These project specifications are only there to help my Subconscious come to the fore during painting. It then starts from the project itself to progressively take control over my creation, inserting elements and messages which I had not planned on inserting. It is always thrilling for me to discover what my brain thinks of the philosophical or scientific concept which constitutes the basis for my work. Generally speaking, the finished painting answers questions I did not have an answer to or even questions I had not yet asked myself about the original theme. Sometimes, I ended up with questions which required extra study on my behalf and would be the starting point for new paintings. This has no end, as lack of inspiration is nowhere near the artist who works in such a way. Art as I see it is permanent multidirectional research. Think of the Greek philosophers, who were originally researchers and who became philosophers once they had started sharing the result of their research.
